I’m Brian Harkins, I have been licensed to practice law  in Louisiana for 26 years.  My full name is David O'Brian Harkins Jr., but I have always been called Brian.

I was an Assistant District Attorney for almost 24 years, and that's where I developed my passion for this area of the law.   When one serves as a prosecuting attorney for that long one becomes an expert, of sorts, in the area of human tragedy.  I witnesses loved ones of victims of crime also experience drastic, sometimes financially catastrophic, life changes that could have been prevented with just a little planning.   The same problems are faced by loved ones when a family member dies or becomes incapacitated due to accident or illness.  Tragedy is tragedy, no matter the cause.  That is why I chose the area of Estate Planning.

Although I practice in the area called Estate Planning, I call myself a Life Planning attorney.   The reason is that there is a misconception that estate planning is something done in the later stages of life, but nothing could be further from the truth.   Wills, trusts, powers of attorney, all associated with estate planning, can protect you during all stages of your life.   

Young adults, young married couples, parent of minor children, blended marriages - all are expose to unique risks and could benefit from the protection of a little Life Planning.  

I work with my clients to create a plan to protect them in the event tragedy happens.  That's Life Planning.
